Postgres hosting for Malaysian teams: self-managed on VPS with DevOps hours

You run PostgreSQL on a VPS with root access, and the included monthly DevOps hours can be spent on the database. Here is what that means for backups, location and daily operation.

Short answer

  1. 14hosting does not sell a managed PostgreSQL service: you run PostgreSQL yourself on a VPS where you have root access.
  2. 2The servers are in the EU, in Frankfurt, not in Malaysia, so round trips from Kuala Lumpur are longer than with a local server.
  3. 3Every VPS plan includes 1 to 8 DevOps hours per month, and the DevOps service list covers PostgreSQL and ClickHouse: data model, replication, PITR backups, tuning and partitioning.
  4. 4Backups are your responsibility unless you assign them to those hours, so set up and test a restore before you go live.
  5. 5Personal data rules are a separate question that your legal adviser decides; 4hosting does not certify compliance.

What self-managed PostgreSQL means in practice

On a VPS you install PostgreSQL from your operating system or from the PostgreSQL project packages, choose the version, and control the configuration files. You also own updates, monitoring, disk space and backups. There is no control panel that does this for you.

The upside is control: any extension you can install, any tuning you need, and no per-database fees. The cost is operational time, which is why many small teams reserve the included DevOps hours for the database.

Backups and point-in-time recovery

The PostgreSQL documentation describes two complementary approaches. A logical dump with pg_dump, restored with pg_restore, is simple and portable between versions. Continuous archiving combines a file-system base backup, for example taken with pg_basebackup, with archived write-ahead log files, and lets you recover to a chosen moment since that base backup.

Point-in-time recovery needs a working archive_command and a place to store the archive that is not the same disk as the database. The official documentation also provides pg_verifybackup to check a base backup against its manifest. A backup you have never restored is only a hope, so schedule a restore test.

Location and latency for users in Malaysia

Frankfurt is far from Malaysia, and a database query that runs next to the application is not affected by that distance. What is affected is every round trip between a Malaysian user or office and the server. We do not publish latency figures, so measure from your own network before you decide.

Keep the application and PostgreSQL on the same VPS, avoid chatty code that issues many queries per page, and use connection pooling.

Data protection is a separate decision

Hosting personal data outside Malaysia raises cross-border transfer questions. We cover that topic on a dedicated page, linked below. What you store, where, and under which legal basis is for you and your legal adviser to decide.

Two Malaysian scenarios

A Kuala Lumpur SaaS start-up

One VPS runs the application and PostgreSQL. The team uses pg_dump nightly and keeps the copies on separate storage, and asks for a DevOps session to add WAL archiving once the first paying customers arrive.

A Penang agency with several client apps

Each client app gets its own database and role on one server. The agency books DevOps hours to review access rules and to test a restore into a scratch server.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the database reachable from the whole internet instead of restricting access to the application server and administrators.
  • Storing backups on the same disk as the database, so one failure removes both.
  • Never testing a restore until the day it is needed.
  • Assuming the included DevOps hours are carried over: they are not, they reset each calendar month.

How 4hosting helps

Our datacentre is in the EU (Frankfurt), not in Malaysia. VPS plans use NVMe SSD storage, give you root access and are ready for Docker and Kubernetes.

Each VPS plan includes 1 to 8 hours of DevOps, CyberSecurity and Programming per month. Request them from the Servicii DevOps section of the client panel, propose a date, and the team delivers. The PostgreSQL and ClickHouse service covers data modelling for OLTP and OLAP, replication, PITR backups, tuning and partitioning. Migration is free, and we invoice in EUR.

We offer no managed database and no compliance certification: we align with ISO 27001 but hold no certificate, and your legal adviser decides what the law requires of you.

Frequently asked questions

Does 4hosting offer managed PostgreSQL?

No. You run PostgreSQL yourself on a VPS. The included DevOps hours can be used for PostgreSQL work such as replication, backups and tuning.

How do the included DevOps hours work?

You request them from the client panel, propose a date, and the team delivers. Hours are per calendar month and are not carried over. Work beyond the quota is accepted and invoiced separately per hour.

Are the servers in Malaysia?

No. The datacentre is in the EU, in Frankfurt. Invoices are issued in EUR.
