Web hosting with a Python backend in Malaysia: Django and FastAPI on VPS

A practical guide for Malaysian developers and agencies putting a Django or FastAPI project into production. Status as of 30.09.2026.

Short answer

  1. 1A Python backend runs well on a VPS with root access: your app server, a reverse proxy in front of it, and a process manager keep it alive.
  2. 2Django is usually served through a WSGI or ASGI server such as Gunicorn, and FastAPI through Uvicorn, started with the fastapi command or Gunicorn.
  3. 3Shared cPanel hosting is built for PHP and WordPress. For a Python API or a Django project, choose a VPS.
  4. 44hosting servers are in the EU (Frankfurt), not in Malaysia. Expect a longer network path than with a local server.
  5. 54hosting sells the VPS and the included DevOps hours; you or our team set up the app. There is no one-click Python platform.

How a Python backend goes into production

The steps below follow the official Django and FastAPI documentation. They apply to any VPS, including one rented from us.

1. Configuration and secrets

Django's own deployment checklist says the secret key must not be hardcoded and gives an example of reading it from an environment variable. It also provides python manage.py check --deploy, which inspects your production settings for common mistakes. Run it before you go live.

2. App server

For Django, install Gunicorn (WSGI) or use Uvicorn workers for ASGI; the Django documentation describes both routes. For FastAPI, the official docs show fastapi run --workers 4 main.py, which starts a parent process and several worker processes. Match the number of workers to the CPU cores of your plan.

3. Reverse proxy and HTTPS

Put a proxy such as Nginx in front, terminate TLS there and forward requests to the app on a local port. FastAPI documents the --proxy-headers option and --forwarded-allow-ips so the app trusts the forwarded scheme and client address. Only trust those headers when the app is reachable through the proxy alone.

4. Static files

Django does not serve static files efficiently in production. Set STATIC_ROOT, run python manage.py collectstatic and let the proxy serve that directory.

5. Keeping it running

Run the app as a systemd service, or as a Docker container with a restart policy, so it starts after a reboot and restarts after a crash. Store logs where you can read them, and keep a tested backup of the database and uploaded files.

Servers in the EU: what that means for Malaysia

4hosting operates a datacenter in the EU, in Frankfurt. We have no datacenter in Malaysia. For an API used mainly by Malaysian customers the network path is longer than with a server in Kuala Lumpur, and we do not publish latency numbers. For back-office tools, internal systems, batch jobs and products with a European or global audience, this matters less. If response time for users in Malaysia is your top requirement, test from your own network before you commit.

If you store personal data, read our guide to the PDPA amendment and cross-border hosting. 4hosting offers a data processing agreement, but it does not certify compliance for you and holds no ISO or SOC 2 certification; our practice is aligned with ISO 27001.

Examples

Kuala Lumpur agency with a Django client portal

An agency runs Django, PostgreSQL and a Celery worker in Docker Compose on one VPS. Nginx serves static files and proxies to Gunicorn. Deployments are done from a CI pipeline.

Penang startup with a FastAPI service

A small team exposes a JSON API built with FastAPI. Uvicorn workers run behind a proxy, and the team books DevOps hours to set up monitoring and alerting.

Internal tool for a Johor logistics firm

A Django admin-style tool is used only by staff. A single small VPS is enough, with nightly database dumps copied off the server.

Common mistakes

  • Running the development server in production. Use a production app server instead.
  • Leaving DEBUG on or keeping the secret key in the repository. Read secrets from the environment and run check --deploy.
  • Exposing the app port directly to the internet instead of placing a proxy in front of it.
  • Forgetting collectstatic, so the admin and assets load without styling.
  • No backup test. A backup you have never restored is an assumption, not a backup.
  • Choosing shared cPanel hosting for a Python API and then looking for a way to keep a process running.

How 4hosting helps

  • VPS with SSD NVMe, root access, Docker and Kubernetes ready, scalable.
  • Every VPS plan includes between 1 and 8 DevOps, CyberSecurity or Programming hours per month, used for work such as Docker setup, CI/CD, monitoring or Python backend development.
  • Hours are requested from the client panel. Unused hours do not carry over. Work beyond the monthly quota is accepted and invoiced separately per hour.
  • Free migration is published for new customers moving from another host.
  • Servers in the EU (Frankfurt). 4hosting does not certify legal compliance for your application. See the PostgreSQL guide for the database side.

FAQ

Can I host a Django site on cPanel hosting from 4hosting?

4hosting cPanel plans are LAMP hosting aimed at WordPress, email and PHP sites. For Django or FastAPI we recommend a VPS, where you control the app server and the process manager.

Where are 4hosting servers?

In the EU: Frankfurt. There are no 4hosting datacenters in Malaysia, so the network path from Malaysia is longer than to a local server. We do not publish latency figures.

Will 4hosting deploy my Python application for me?

Each VPS plan includes monthly DevOps and Programming hours that can be used for deployment work. You request them from the client panel and propose a date. Anything over the quota is invoiced separately.
